The love for medicine inspired many authors to release great books that have medicine references in them or that are truly and fully about it. In this article, I will show you a short list of must-read medical books, that have inspired me also. In this list being mostly nonfiction books, I will mark the fiction ones with a ( ᑞ৒ ).

1. When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi is a beautifully, well-written book about the author, who after training for more than 10 years for neurosurgery, got diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. 3. The Intern Blues by Robert Marion, should be considered a must for anyone that wants to pursue a medical carrier as it is the truest book I’ve ever read on the topic of medicine. In this book, Dr. Robert Marion asked three interns from a small group at the New York medical center to keep a careful diary over the year. Their stories describing real-life lessons are often funny offering a feeling of personal triumph.

4. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot was also made into a movie. I recommend reading it instead of watching it, as your understanding of it will deepen and the experience will be more profound. HeLa (Henrietta Lacks) was a poor tobacco farmer, that without knowing it, in the year 1951 has had come cells taken and used for producing medicine, vaccines, cloning, gene mapping and more. This book offers a moving story about a difference in races, ethics, and medicine.

5. Final Exam: A Surgeon’s Reflections on Morality by Pauline Chen has a lovely story about the author, who, when starting medical school, only thought about saving lives. She is shocked tough to find out how much death would surround her in her work. The book follows her through the course of her education, offering the reader the idea of her struggle produced by her sense of empathy.

6. There could not be a list about medical books without mentioning The Real Grey’s Anatomy: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Real Lives of Surgical Residences by Andrew Holz presents the accurate reflection of life in and out of the OR. The author examines a group of new residents, showing the true nature of their emotional ups and downs that come with being a student in the field of surgery. The medical drama in Grey’s Anatomy is for entertainment purposes only, this being proven in the book.
